Clark Griswold’s plan to have the perfect family Christmas goes horribly wrong in the movie, and that is why this film is one of the best movies to watch around Christmas time. The 1989 movie features lots of classic scenes, as well as some truly unforgettable quotes. Here are some of them.

10 Oh, Eddie… If I Woke Up Tomorrow With My Head Sewn To The Carpet, I Wouldn’t Be More Surprised Than I Am Right Now

Cousin Eddie, as well as his wife and kids, show up, and he asks whether or not they surprised Clark, and this is the response Clark gives. Things were already getting pretty crazy for the Griswold family before they showed up, but Eddie’s presence does not make things any easier.

When they arrive on the scene, it is pretty clear that they were not originally invited. No one seems to want them there, but since everyone is pretty nice, they welcome them anyway. But it is still rude to show up to someone’s house unannounced, especially during the holidays. But Eddie doesn’t seem like someone who has many manners, so it’s not surprising that he would do something like that.

9 You Couldn’t Hear A Dump Truck Driving Through A Nitroglycerin Plant

Two of the relatives that show up to spend Christmas with the Griswolds are Aunt Bethany and Uncle Lewis, and this is something that he says to her. This is only one of the numerous quotes that proves that Aunt Bethany has a particularly hard time when it comes to hearing what people say to her.

At one point in the movie, Aunt Bethany hears a peculiar noise, and she asks what it is. This quote is her husbands’ response to her, but she was right. There was a sound, and it turned out to be a squirrel who made it into the house.

8 You Serious, Clark?

This is Eddie’s response to Clark when he says something about Santa Clause. The thing that makes it funny is the fact that Clark was not talking to Eddie. He was actually talking to his children, who still believe in Santa Clause.

When Eddie delivers this line, Clark looks at him with a dumbfounded expression on his face, which makes the line even more funny. Clark was just trying to get the kids even more excited for Christmas, but he just ended up proving that Eddie might still believe in the mythological character. A lot of the humor in this film is connected to Eddie and his family.

7 Grace? She Passed Away 30 Years Ago

When everyone is about to have dinner, they ask Aunt Bethany to say grace, and she mistakenly thinks that they are talking about someone she used to know. Uncle Lewis ends up telling her what they want, but when they all bow their heads to listen to her say grace, things get even funnier.

Instead of saying the right thing, she ends up saying the pledge of allegiance while everyone silently opens their eyes and gives each other some very confused facial expressions. Since no one wants to make the situation worse, they just decide to go with it and let her finish.

6 Ain’t That Somethin’? She Falls Down A Well, Her Eyes Go Cross. She Gets Kicked By A Mule. They Go Back To Normal. I Don’t Know.

Eddie’s daughter, Ruby Sue, was once crossed-eyed, but Eddie says this line in the movie because she went through something that fixed the issue. No one knows the complete story behind how she became cross-eyed in the first place, or how it got fixed, but Eddie’s short explanation of it is pretty funny.

His body language when he is saying this line makes it even better. When he is saying it, Eddie acts like this is just something that all parents and children go through every day, even though it is definitely something that should be checked out by a doctor.

5 Can I Refill Your Eggnog For You? Get You Something To Eat? Drive You Out To The Middle Of Nowhere And Leave You For Dead?

This is Clark’s way of being a good host to Eddie right after he and his family randomly show up for Christmas. One of the reasons why Clark is so frustrated is because Eddie makes it clear that they do not plan to leave his house until sometime in January, so he is having a hard time dealing with Eddie’s presence.

Shortly after they arrive, Clark and Eddie enjoy some eggnog in the house. They are doing a bit of catching up, and Clark says this line to him. Eddie does not even seem to notice exactly what he said. But maybe he did notice, and just does not care. Either way, it is a pretty humorous part of the film.

4 I Don’t Know What To Say, Except It’s Christmas And We’re All In Misery

Christmas is great, but it can be stressful, and that is what makes this line funny and relatable. Clark’s wife, Ellen, is probably one of the most sensible and reasonable characters throughout the whole movie, and she often says a lot of things that make sense, and this line is one of them.

Holidays probably would not be much fun for her if she were a real person. Her mother puts a lot of pressure on her, and her husband is always trying to make every little detail of everything as perfect as it can possibly be. Hosting all of those family members doesn’t help, either.

3 Clark, Audrey’s Frozen From The Waist Down

Clark and Ellen’s daughter, Audrey, becomes a bit frozen when they are trying to pick out a Christmas tree, which is why Ellen says this line to him. At this point in the movie, everyone is freezing in the snow, and they are all waiting to go home.

Meanwhile, Clark will not rest until he can find a beautiful Christmas tree to put in their living room. When Ellen informs him about Audrey being frozen, he does not seem to mind. Clark believes that it’s just something that comes along with shopping for a real tree out in the woods.

2 Oh Dear, Did I Break Wind?

Aunt Bethany has some really funny lines in this movie, and this is one of them. This is what she says when Ellen tells her that she should not have brought presents. She is not exactly the most intelligent character in the film, and she does not understand what Ellen is talking about when she says she did not have to get anyone any gifts.

That is why Aunt Bethany responds by asking if she passed some gas. Part of what makes her response so funny is what her husband says to her after that. He sarcastically asks her if anyone left the room, and then he explains what Ellen meant.

1 If That Thing Had Nine Lives, He Just Spent ‘Em All

Eddie makes a terrible event seem much funnier by responding to it with this line. In National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, there is a rather unfortunate and sad thing that happens to a cat.

But Eddie really knows how to lighten up a mood, even if he is not trying to do it. After that happens to the cat, he says this line. The reason why is it humorous is because there is a brand of cat food called “9 Lives.” Eddie is pretty much always a funny character in the film, even during the moments that are a bit more serious, like this one.
